Elstree Screen Heritage
Elstreeprops.com works closely with the Elstree Heritage Group, supporting them in all their ventures.
Previously known as ‘The Elstree Film and Television Heritage Group‘, we are volunteers dedicated to recording, preserving and sharing the unique local legacy of film and television activity in Elstree and Borehamwood.
Our Supporters
Our Patrons are Sir Roger Moore, Miss Hayley Mills and Barry Norman.
Over 300 people have joined our mailing list.
We work actively with such local organisations as Elstree Studios, Hertsmere Borough Council, Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council and the Borehamwood & Elstree Times.
We have also established working relationships with the British Film Institute, Screen East, the National Media Museum and the Museum of London.
Our Activities
Each Summer we run a week-long Elstree Film Festival at Borehamwood’s Reel Cinema, with films made in Elstree shown back on the big screen where they belong. This event is now firmly established as part of the Civic Festival. From time to time we also screen other Elstree films.
Our publications include ‘Remembering the Gate Studios’ and ‘’Celebrating Our Unique Studio Heritage – A Plaque Guide’ and we have just completed a special souvenir guide called ‘Made At Elstree’ to mark 80 years of film-making at Elstree Film Studios.
We are building an archive of material based on interviews with local residents and others who worked in the Studios, plus photos, film footage and other material from the studios.
We display items from our archive on-line at our web site and locally, and we also deliver public presentations on aspects of local film and television.
We work regularly with staff and students at Hertswood, our local comprehensive school.
Key Achievements
In the first half of 2008 :
1. We have prepared and circulated free-to-all a special souvenir guide called ‘Made At Elstree’ to mark 80 years of film-making at Elstree Studios.
2. We have just completed our third Elstree Film Festival, the biggest and best with celebrity guests including
Richard Todd and Jeremy Bulloch.
3. We are discussing a number of opportunities with Elstree Studios for sharing more widely, the unique local heritage of film and television activity.
4. We are leading a community-based Working Group which aims to build on the local film heritage through refurbishment of the rail station, our gateway to Elstree & Borehamwood, as well as themed enhancements along Shenley Road.
In the second half of 2008 we will:
1. Add to our archive of photos, artefacts and oral interviews. A copy is held safely in computer files while the original material is returned or stored in secure facilities.
2. Work with staff and students at Hertswood School to develop such projects as a Film & TV Club and a survey by students to see if their own families are ‘Film Families’ who helped create the local legacy of film and TV activity.
3. Work with the BBC on a proposed mini-documentary on life behind the scenes at Elstree
Key Challenges
We will focus our efforts to :
1. Attract new volunteers.
2. Raise our public image with a ‘new look’ website.
3. Achieve the formal status of a registered charity.
More About ELSTREE SCREEN HERITAGE:
Founded by local volunteers in May 2005, Elstree Screen Heritage is focused exclusively on recording, preserving and sharing the legacy of film and television in “Britain’s Hollywood”.
It collaborates with local schools and companies to raise awareness of this legacy, and in 2006 started “Elstree Film Festival”, an annual screening of classic films made in Elstree.
The Group cares strongly about the past, present and future of film and television in the UK, particularly in Elstree and Borehamwood, and supports this unique local legacy through a range of activities.
